Moving Checklist

PREPARATION

  • Research immigration agents (services & fees) *Use a licensed immigration officer
  • Research the option of doing it yourself – then decide
  • Research fully what the entire emigration process will cost you
  • Formulate a plan & timeline working backwards from a goal date that you set for yourself to be in NZ
  • If selecting an agent, sign up with one from the start so that they can guide you on the correct path

DOCUMENTATION GATHERING

  • Check with your agent (if you are using one) or use the INZ website to find a full list of documentation that you will require for either your work visa / EOI application
  • Start gathering those documents FIRST i.e. be ready to apply for a work visa with all doc’s on hand before searching for a job

FINDING A JOB

  • Get your CV in a decent, summarised “NZ” friendly format
  • Contact agencies, search job seeking websites, join social media communities and respond to company website vacancy ads directly
  • Get a job offer!

ANIMALS

  • Book animal transport company & pay deposit
  • Book NZ quarantine facility & pay deposit
  • Check all medical requirements have been met (micro-chipped, vaccinations, blood tests, health certificates, import permits)
  • Re-home pets who will not be coming with to NZ

BANKING & FINANCE

  • Open NZ bank account
  • Change cellphone numbers with SA bank for OTP codes
  • Obtain copy of IRP5 for proof of tax no. (or SARS clearance certificate if required) for IRD No.
  • Make decisions on retirement annuity’s (freezing / withdrawal if financially emigrating)
  • Obtain reference documentation for lease agreements / finance in NZ:
    – Bank statements
    – Letter from bank re: account in good standing
    – Transunion / credit check reports
    – Account statements / utility bills
    – References from previous landlords
    – Arrange Power Of Attorney if required for any reason

MEDICAL

  • Investigate private medical options in NZ (if required)
  • Obtain letter from Dr for carrying of medication on flight/s
  • Purchase 2-3 months chronic medication before leaving SA (so that you have enough to sustain you until you find a Dr in NZ to do your monthly prescriptions)

SCHOOLS

  • Give notice at SA school
  • Notify SA school of bank details for deposit refunds if applicable
  • Research schools in NZ
  • Contact NZ schools to make appointments (if possible)
  • Find out about: School zone, Uniform requirements, Fees / donations, School hours
  • Select a school and complete enrolment forms

CANCELLATIONS IN SA

  • Telephone & internet lines
  • Armed response / security
  • TV License
  • Memberships (Gym etc.)
  • Household insurance
  • Car insurance (on sale of vehicles)
  • Car tracker (on sale of vehicles)
  • Cellphone contracts and insurance
  • Medical aid
  • Refuse bin cleaning service
  • PO Box
  • Any other monthly costs no longer required

HOUSE SALE

  • Contact real estate agent (if required) / advertise privately
  • Arrange electrical compliance certificate
  • Sell house
  • Secure temporary accomodation if required (after house transfer completes and before moving to NZ)
  • Rates & Taxes (refund of deposit on sale of house)

DOMESTIC EMPLOYMENT

  • Give adequate / lawful notice to any / all domestic helpers
  • Ensure UIF is in order and that notice is provided of retrenchment
  • Final retrenchment payment to domestic helpers

SHIPPING OF HOUSEHOLD CONTENTS AND/OR VEHICLES

  • Obtain quotations for shipping of contents
  • Research cost of buying new items on arrival in NZ, compared to shipping costs
  • Sort through household items to determine which items to sell / which to take with
  • Sell / giveaway unwanted items
  • Book shipping company & pay deposit if required

VEHICLE SALES

  • Obtain quotes from dealers / advertise privately
  • Sell vehicle
  • Change of Ownerships

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

  • Obtain letter of permission from spouse to fly with children if required
  • Book flights (ensuring 40kg baggage allowance for emigration)
  • Arrange travel insurance
  • Ensure enough entertainment for children who will be flying
  • Air sickness medication for adults / children who will be flying

LEAVING SA

  • Make final health & beauty appointments (Dr’s, Dentist, Optometrist, Hair/Beauty etc.)
  • Arrange farewell party if desired
  • Final packing of luggage

ARRIVING IN NZ

  • Arrange temporary accomodation if required
  • Find permanent residence
  • Arrange rental vehicle if required
  • Purchase permanent vehicle
  • Convert SA drivers license
  • Buy monthly train tickets if required
